It’s going down: Return to fitness, day 1

Man Stuff

Perhaps you’re a regular reader of this blog. Maybe you just happened upon this post by accident. Whatever the reason you’re seeing this photo of me, I have only one thing to say:

I’m sorry.

This unflattering image is here simply to establish a starting point on my journey back to fitness. You see, the sad reality of human physiology has caught up with me. When you’re a 53-year-old man, the combination of couch-potato-itus and overeating invariably lead to an unsightly gut.

But what’s really driving this is the fact that I have inherited by family’s tendency to have high blood sugar and need medicine to control diabetes. After a check up a number of years ago, I found that I weighed around 200 pounds and was on the verge of being diabetic.

I immediately began working out regularly and eating right. I didn’t really enjoy the discipline, but I stuck with it. I lost weight, felt better and brought my blood sugar levels into a healthy range.

You probably know what happened next, right?

Over time, I stopped working out. I stopped eating smart. Now I’m back to 192 pounds and have re-acquired the belly fat that seems to an engine for all sorts of ills.

So yesterday, I worked out for the first time in a long time. I’m cutting out the sweets and carbs. And I hope to re-establish a healthy lifestyle that I can maintain over the long haul.

Maybe I’ll give you an update from time to time. Sound good?

Any tips or suggestions on what has helped you get fit and stay fit?

Did you get a gym membership? A Jane Fonda workout tape? I’m on the road to fitness too. However, there’s no chance in you know where that ill be posting a “before” anywhere near as revealing. The world doesn’t need to see that! So far I’ve just been walking at least 3 days a week and I hope get into running soon. It would be great if I could afford a gym membership. Can’t wait to see the progress. I bet Rob DeSantis has lots of tips for you.

      Hey Jenn,

No Jane Fonda workout tape for me. Though I am considering the spandex outfit and leg warmers!

There is a fitness center in my building downtown. For the most part, I’m planning on working out during my lunch hour.

Glad to see you’ve got your own fitness plan. By the looks of your Facebook photos, you’ve found a way to inject some fun into the whole process. Good job!

      Dave
